Bacteria from chrysanthemums on the agar plate
On the agar plates, I imprinted chrysanthemum that is the symbol of mourn and grief in Asian culture. I tried to represent revival and circle of life by culturing bacteria from withered symbolic flowers. I made 304 bacteria Petri dishes.
On April 16th, 2014, the South Korean ferry capsized while carrying 476 people, mostly secondary school students from Danwon High School. The number 304 stands for the number of victims of this disaster. When I made this work, it was an anniversary of the disaster and sadly, Korean people gradually became indifferent about this disaster even though problems had not been solved. I wanted to make people remember it and make their interests back to this tragedy.
